We got a chance to sit down with MyCampMate founder and mastermind Tyler Campbell and ask him a few questions about this amazing tool as follows:
Explain My Camp Mate and how it started:
The idea for MyCampMate started when I was headed out on a camping trip with my family and some friends. About and hour and a half into the trip I had the sinking feeling that I forgot something important. Well I did forget something. All the firewood for the weekend. I was responsible for supplying the firewood for the weekend and I had completely forgotten! I was unfamiliar with the area and I wasn’t aware of a town nearby. I kept driving until I found a general store that fortunately sold firewood….but in those small boxes for an ungodly amount! I was reluctant to pull the trigger on them but I had to, so I got two boxes. Still steamed from the purchase we pulled out of the store, continued up the road and wouldn’t ya know on the side of the road was a guy selling 4 times the firewood at the same price. Super.
I was extremely heated about not knowing where to find what I needed combined with not being able to stay organized with friends on the same trip. My wife and I jokingly said “hey I wish there was an app for that”.
That night around the fire we kicked around the idea. I went home did a little digging around and it grew from there.
I thought what if there was a way that I could create a trip, invite people and together could mark the spot that they were heading so everyone knew. Then like a virtual bulletin board, leave notes about what was needed, or already done for that trip,and everyone could just add to it? Like a message board and have a place to look to stay organized? And then what if during that trip, we all were able to share these types of new found and just discovered spots to get firewood? Not only those, but think of more spots to mark with a pin. The small local stores that we don’t know about? Swimming holes, rope swings, trail heads, parks, etc…
A person from Mississippi who has NEVER been to a lake in CA could now be able to select what pins they wanted and would now know what all the locals know and because of everyone sharing from their own unique trip.
In a sense its a travel assistant and its socially networking with others based on sharing from your trip. So…trip based social networking. I am not a huge forum guy so I just took the Forum to the map. That’s basically what the pins are. Mini- Forums about that specific lat/log.
Why did you start MyCampMate?
I started this business, this app and this community with the idea and dream of completely changing the way that we travel and share our experiences. I didn’t want to spend hours looking for what to do and where to go. I wanted one location for it all, have it fast and being a visual person, I needed the map. I can see it all there and the comments in my hand! Having the ability for the entire community to also leave comments and add to the tips and conversations about that exact latitude and longitude to keep the information real time and current is a huge value to every traveler.
That’s what this whole thing is about. Assisting and helping each other by sharing.
I know that I will never be on a trip with everyone in the world, but I would like to know, experience and learn from them. Imagine the value and possibilities of there being one location (MyCampMate) where we all have the power and ability to share and leave a “pin in the ground” to mark the spot, and put your valuable real time info right were your standing. I can only imagine the things that we will find only enhancing the trip that were on. I figured the time that I would save, by simply seeing all these local under the radar finds from fellow mates made perfect sense.
What is your vision for MyCampMate?
I have a vision of a community “Assisting one another” and being, well….mates. Openly sharing our travel and outdoor finds, cool spots, tips, hints, sights, smell, tastes, updates, notes, and real time experiences visually and tangibly by placing and finding the pins left on our map. Instead of the typical forums about a topic, the map, the pins, the comments on the pins ARE the forum conversation.
I have a vision of family’s, scout troops, day trippers, clubs, guides, and friends all using the app to stay connected and better organized with those on the trip. Its all built on and for friends and family to invite, create and enjoy our travels better. The ability to experience things and find stuff that we never have before been able to simply because we didn’t know it was there or even existed. I have an idea and vision of completely changing the way that we share travel with one another even though we will never meet. I have an idea and vision of creating a community where we support the small town mom and pop shops by placing their pin on the map that are sprinkled around every corner of America, supporting them who in turn support us. This is a community and App built for outdoor enthusiast by an outdoor enthusiast who simply had a need that would make his trips better. I have a vision of the App and Community growing and evolving as the tribe sees fit.
